Our Centre

Nonceba started life as a small project in rooms rented from Shawco in Site B Khayelitsha.  It quickly became evident that the scale of child sexual abuse was so great that it couldn’t be handled from such small premises. Dr. Georges Tsalacopoulos, Nonceba’s Chairman for nine years and eminent South African gynaecologist, insisted that we had to grow. Fundraising was kicked off by a donation to build the Safe House from Omsfin, suitable land was identified and purchased with a donation from CareCross Health, plans were drawn up and fundraising put into place.  Jupiter Drawing Room designed a brochure which won an award which paid for all the brochures and postage.  Lauren and Arthur Gillis, of Protea Hotels, organised an international YPO (Young Presidents Organisation) Conference in Cape Town during which the amazing amount of R3 million was raised at auction.  Vodacom donated R1m as did “I Care for my Body”.   So instead of building a small safe house with some office accommodation we were able to build a centre that boasts:

  • Two Safe Houses
  • Counselling Suite
  • Therapy Room
  • Community Hall
  • Training Room
  • Offices and Reception

“The architectural work was done by Simone le Fevre and Julian Cooke, who worked hard to produce an environmentally appropriate building.  We added solar panels to help keep down costs and to set an ecological example. We are very proud of it but most importantly it gives us the facilities to provide a first class service to the community.” Hazel Black – Chairman

This is a project that has received considerable media attention having been the subject of reports on national and international television on child sexual abuse.
